Medicare Moves to Pay for Prostate Cancer Drug Provenge
PCF’s Take: This is encouraging news for many prostate cancer patients with advanced metastatic disease who may benefit from treatment with Provenge. The Prostate Cancer Foundation began funding research for immunotherapy in the 1990s when many suggested it could not be done. We will continue to fund programs that investigate why immunotherapy works for some patients and not others, as well as programs and that can discover additional therapies that can stimulate the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells. This development, along with this week’s FDA approval of ipilimumab for patients with advanced melanoma are important validations of the promise of immunotherapy for cancer patients. Ipilimumab is currently in Stage III trials for prostate cancer patients.
