About Kevin B.

In 2014 my 40 year old husband was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer with a Gleason score of 9 the day after Christmas. Our only daughter was turning 3 in February and I was a 34 year old stay at home Mom. After traveling the tri-state area and beyond, we were told a full Radical Prostatectomy was his only real option given his age. We were lucky enough to get into to see Dr. Schaeffer  of Johns Hopkins and, Kevin received surgery in early February 2015. He worked hard on his recovery and was able to attend my daughter’s 3rd birthday party in late February that month.

The reality of cancer became very real for our family when Kevin would sit in waiting rooms filled with men 55+ to receive the necessary tests.  We were forced to quickly find a sperm bank and learn the process prior to his surgery while accepting his fate at 40. I became a dog with a bone to find the best HCP for his situation and started traveling for the first time on Highways since a car accident a year prior. Our whole family rallied to support the quick and thorough response to the devastating news. From the “Grandma’s” moving into to take care of our daughter while we were in Baltimore for a week over surgery, to my Dad traveling with me to care for my support dog ( a chubby pug named Ruby) while I supported my husband.

We are extremely lucky to have had all the resources and knowledge to get the very best result possible. Not a day goes by that we do not show our gratitude for the happen circumstances that gave us now 3 years PSA clear. We are excited about working towards the 5 year goal and Kevin is now back to his basketball loving, Dallas Cowboys cheering, amazing father that he worked so hard for.

I look for opportunities everyday to advocate for the early detection and testing for younger men. If it wasn’t for our GP testing his PSA on his annual (because we have great insurance) I would be writing a different story. I also would love to make is more socially acceptable for younger men to be recognized as prostate cancer survivors. The reality is they do not have many options for their treatment and lose the most right away.

Thank you for listening!

Lauren
