Dr. David Walter Kupke, 59, departed this life to be with His Lord on Dec. 1, 2012, after a 4-year courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born Feb. 5, 1953, in Detroit, MI to Beatrice Kupke and the late Rev. Harold Kupke. Dave spent the majority of his youth in Lincoln, NE and graduated from Concordia High School in Seward, NE.
After graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne College in NC, Dave studied cancer research at UNC Medical School at Chapel Hill. It was there that he developed an interest in vision care and transferred to The Illinois College of Optometry. He earned his Doctorate of Optometry in 1980 and interned at the Department of Neuro-Opthalmology at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He practiced as an optometrist for 29 years in Virginia Beach, during which time Dr. Kupke’s primary interest was enabling his patients to see clearly and efficiently. One of his greatest joys was getting to know his patients through meaningful conversation, and it was a pleasure he greatly missed after retirement.
He belonged to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach and served as an usher, lector, teacher, and church council member. He especially loved singing in the church choir as a tenor.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kay Kupke; children, Daniel and Laura Kupke; mother, Beatrice Kupke; sisters, Kathryn Manthei, Carol Lang, and Lois Cox; brother, Kenneth Kupke; and many affectionate aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Dave will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him well.
