On June 1, 2015, Angels of the Lord descended upon Michael L. Bland, Sr., and quietly took away the gentle soul of our beloved son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend to bring him home to his eternal resting place. Born on April 21, 1954, in Los Angeles, CA, he was the youngest son of Charles and Lois Slaughter Bland. He attended Compton Unified Schools. He attended McKinley Elementary School, Vanguard Junior High School and Centennial High School where he graduated in 1972. Michael professed a belief in Christ at an early age, was baptized and became a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Manual Scott. He later joined Another Chance Outreach under the leadership of Rickey Hammond. Michael met and joined in Holy Matrimony with Debra Whitehead on August 31, 1974, and to this union one child was born. He went to work in various fields including telecommunication, catering and custodial work.
Michael loved life and lived his life to the fullest. But above all, Michael loved the Lord, and his spirit was representative of God’s love for us. He never passed up an opportunity to tell everyone of God’s goodness. He was a fun-loving guy and a wonderful dancer; he enjoyed listening to his Oldies-but-Goodies and the Blues. He loved to sing, and in later years he became a member of his neighborhood band Serenity, where he sang and played the harmonica and guitar. He was also a die-hard dominos player and fisherman. He loved his family and close friends. Every year he would organize family gatherings and barbeques. He was an outstanding cook … and he absolutely enjoyed doing so. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
“For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.” Romans 14:8
