Why be proactive?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s a good idea to proactively ask about somatic<\/span> and germline genetic testing<\/span> during your appointments. Most doctors strive to provide excellent care, but they may not always know the latest testing recommendations—especially as research advances and new treatments become available.   • Should I be re-tested if the results were unclear or if my disease has progressed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • If I have not been tested, can I be tested now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Should I schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor<\/span>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Should my family members consider germline genetic testing<\/span>? If yes, who can advise them about this and help them get tested if they want to?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    How much do these tests cost? Does insurance cover them?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Medicare and most private insurance plans cover somatic<\/span> and germline genetic testing<\/span> for patients with advanced prostate cancer<\/span><\/span>. Out-of-pocket costs can be up to $250 for germline<\/span> genetic tests, while somatic testing<\/span><\/span> costs more (price varies). If you need help paying for testing, financial assistance or payment plans may be available. Ask your doctor or care team for guidance.
