1996: A Bigger Megaphone

Unlike many other forms of the disease, prostate cancer had never had vocal and effective advocates. Men were naturally reticent to discuss such a personal disease, and few prospects existed for better treatments.
PCF changed that.
Several high-profile media engagements bring attention and support for prostate cancer in 1996. At Mike’s urging, two major magazines feature prominent prostate cancer patients on their covers – Time (with General Norman Schwarzkopf) and Fortune (with Intel Chairman and CEO Andy Grove).
Schwarzkopf also joins Mike and others on the Larry King Show. King suggests they should “march on Washington” to demand greater support. Mike concurs, and Schwarzkopf agrees to co-chair the event.
Following the broadcast, more than 3,000 people call the show to learn more about clinical trials.
