  • Cubs and Tigers Meet in Cross-League Matchup
    • Considering these 2 teams that missed the playoffs last year, it is surprising that the Tigers and Cubs both have had such stellar seasons so far this season. The 2 teams faced off in Detroit, with Tigers ace SP Tarik Skubal delivering a gem – 7.2 IP with 1 ER – to silence the Cubs bats. The Tigers were able to get a pair of home runs in the 6th and 8th, thanks to DET 1B Spencer Torkelson and CF Jahmai Jones, who hit his first home run this season, to take a 3-1 lead. CHC SP Ben Brown also had a great performance – pitching 7 innings and only allowing 2 runs – but he takes the loss, as the Cubs will look to get back on track tomorrow vs. a Detroit team that seems to have all the right answers.
    • Chicago is now 39-24 and sits in 1st place in the NL Central.
    • Detroit is now 43-23 and sits in 1st place in the AL Central.
  • Red Sox and Yankees Combine for 5 Home Runs in Rivalry
    • The Red Sox and Yankees kicked off the greatest rivalry in American sports yesterday. The Yankees wasted no time getting started, with NYY OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. Scoring a 3-run home run in the top of the 1 st followed by NYY SS Anthony Volpe, who hit his own 2-run home run to give the Yankees a commanding 5-0 lead after just 1 inning. The onslaught would continue, with Chisholm Jr. and Volpe notching a pair of RBIs in the bottom of the 2nd to give New York a 7-0 lead. The Red Sox bats would not be discouraged, however, with BOS 3B Marcelo Mayer hitting a solo home run to put the Red Sox on the board in the top of the 5th. Both teams would get another home run, 1 from NYY 1B Paul Goldschmidt, and 1 from BOS 3B Rafael Devers, and while the Red Sox were able to get some RBIs to keep themselves in the game, they ultimately dropped the first of a 3-game series, 9-6. The Yankees will surely look to capitalize on the momentum and keep building in their AL East lead.
    • New York (Y) is now 39-23 and sits in 1st place in the AL East.
    • Boston is now 30-35 and sits in 4 th place in the AL East.
  • White Sox Gets Hot; Take Down Royals
    • After a big day for the KC offense, the Royals looked poised to continue their hot streak, with KC 3B Maikel Garcia and KC 1B Vinnie Pasquantino hitting a pair of solo home runs in the 3rd inning. However, the rest of the game would be all White Sox, who tied the game 2-2 with a 372-foot home run from CWS OF Mike Tauchman in the bottom of the 5th . No more runs would be scored until the 8th, when the White Sox offense found its groove and scored 5 RBIs to take a decisive 7-2 lead into the 9th . Kansas City will look to get on track tomorrow, meanwhile the White Sox hope to get a win in the next 2 games to come away from this series positive.
    • Kansas City is 33-31 and sits in 4 th place in the AL Central.
    • Chicago (W) is 21-43 and sits in 5 th place in AL Central.
  • Twins and Blue Jays Fight for AL Wild Card Spots
    • The Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins began their matchup today, and the Twins wasted no time getting on the board, with MIN OF Trevor Larnach hitting a 421-foot solo home run in the top of the 1st inning. The Twins were able to get a couple of RBIs in the top of the 2nd, leading, 3-0. While no runs were scored for the Blue Jay sin the first 3 innings, their bats activated in the 4 th, kickstarted by TOR SS Addison Barger, who hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 4th to cut the lead 3-2. The rest of the bats followed suit, with the Blue Jays tacking on more runs, a 2-RBI double and 435-foot, solo home run from TOR OF George Springer, in the 6th, to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 lead. Both teams would score again, with the Blue Jays winning 6-3 in a game that saw 3 home runs.

    • Minnesota is 34-29 and sits in 2 nd place in the AL Central.
  • Dodgers travel to St. Louis; Take on Hot Cardinals
    • After splitting a series vs. the Mets, the Dodgers went to Missouri to take on the Cardinals. In one of the only instances so far this year, the Dodgers were an underdog going into the game. Cardinals SP Sonny Gray made due on St. Louis being favorites, pitching into the 7th inning in a shutout. The Cardinals bullpen was able to close the door, shutting the superstar Dodgers lineup down, with a pair of STL catchers, Pedro Pagés and William Contreras, hitting home runs in the 2nd and 8th innings to keep the Cardinals on the HRC board. The Dodgers will look to get back on track tomorrow, as the Cardinals hope to ride the homefield advantage to a major series win.
    • Los Angeles (D) is now 38-26 and sits in 1st place in the NL West.
    • St. Louis is now 35-28 and sits in 2nd place in the NL Central.

Other Fun Facts:

  • The 2019 Atlanta Braves hit more home runs in the month of June – 56 – than any other team in history.
  • In 2017, the Cincinnati Reds Scooter Gennett became one of the unlikeliest players to hit four home runs in a single game; Gennett hit his record-tying home runs in an HRC game.
  • The Atlanta Braves (2023) and Minnesota Twins (2019) hit 307 home runs each in a single season, more than any team in history.
  • Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs 12 times; the first time was in 1918 when he hit 11 home runs (and won 13 games as a pitcher).
  • In 2021, Miguel Cabrera became the last MLB player to top 500 home runs; 34-yearold Giancarlo Stanton is the current active leader with 408.
  • Mark McGwire hit more home runs per at bat – 10.61 – than any player in history. Aaron Judge (11.9) and Pete Alonso (13.27) have the best ratios among current players.
  • Sammy Sosa has 3 of the 6 seasons with the most HRs hit, hitting 66 in 1998, 63 in 1999, and 64 in 2001. However, he never once lead the major leagues in home runs. Despite his prowess as a power hitter, he was surpassed in all 3 seasons, in the 1998-99 seasons by Mark McGwire, and in 2001 by Barry Bonds.
  • Weirdly enough, no one has ever hit 55 HRs in a season.
  • Hitting a grand slam is incredibly impressive enough. Hitting multiple in the same game is nearly unheard of. Even more absurd, multiple grand slams in the same inning? Only one player has accomplished that feat – and that is Fernando Tatis. On April 23rd, 1999, he hit two grand slams as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, facing the Los Angeles Dodgers that day. His son, Fernando Tatis Jr, is now a superstar outfielder for the San Diego Padres.
  • The first Home Run was hit by the Chicago White Stockings infielder, Ross Barnes, on May 2, 1876. Despite being nearly 150 years ago, the Chicago White Stockings are still an MLB team – but not the White Sox. The White Stockings actually became the Chicago Cubs.
  • Andy “Pepper” Oyler, known as a small player, had the shortest home run in baseball history – an [astonishing] 24-inch home run. As the story goes, the weather conditions in Minnesota were poor that day, and the hard-hit ball went directly into the mud in front of the plate. By the time they had found the ball, Oyler had cleared the bases, for an inside the park home run.
  • What’s perhaps more impressive than hitting any Home Run or Grand Slam? Robbing one! How about Mike Cameron, former All-Star and gold glover, known as being one of the only players to amass 250 home runs and 250 steals in their career. On May 2, 2002, not only did he hit 4 Home Runs in the game, with his 5th hit missing the wall by just feet, making it all the way to the warning track, he also robbed a home run.
