Active Surveillance for Cancer of the Prostate (ASCaP)
The UCLA ASCAP Project is an Observational, Longitudinal, and Open-ended Study Aimed at Establishing a Structured Program of Non-interventional Follow-up for Localized Prostate Cancer.
About This Trial
- This study is evaluating an approach called active surveillance, which closely monitors early-stage prostate cancer instead of immediately starting treatments like surgery or radiation.
- It is designed for men with low-risk cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate and who have not received any prior prostate cancer treatments.
- Under this approach, doctors carefully track the cancer and only begin treatment if tests show it is starting to grow.
- Before joining, you should know that participating requires attending regular follow-up visits and agreeing to undergo repeated prostate tissue samples, or biopsies, to ensure the cancer remains safe to watch.
More Information
- Active Surveillance (A.S.) of prostate cancer (CaP) is the systematic monitoring of men with low-risk, localized lesions, with curative treatment of those whose tumors show substantial progression.
- A.S. is different from Watchful Waiting (W.W.), which is the palliative treatment of men with progressive prostate cancer.
