August is National Wellness Month, a call to take action on the habits that shape long-term health: what you eat, how you move, and how well you rest.
These aren’t just wellness tips, they’re the product of sustained scientific research. For more than three decades, PCF has funded innovative prostate cancer research aimed at improving prevention, detection, and treatment, and helping men live longer, healthier lives.
Nutrition: Diets rich in vegetables, healthy fats, and lean protein, and lower in red and processed meat, have been linked to better prostate cancer outcomes. Start with small swaps, like choosing chicken over steak or adding grilled vegetables to your next BBQ. Consistent habits like these can strengthen your overall wellbeing, lower your risk of chronic illness, and support better outcomes throughout treatment and recovery.
Movement: Regular physical activity, even something as simple as a daily walk, is associated with lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer and better outcomes for those in treatment or recovery. Choose activities you enjoy and aim to move most days of the week. Your doctor can help determine what’s safe for you, especially during recovery or if you’re facing advanced prostate cancer.
Sleep: Quality sleep helps calm inflammation, strengthens immune function, and supports the body’s ability to repair itself, all of which play a role in how well treatment works and how recovery unfolds. Even small steps, like a consistent bedtime, can help protect the kind of deep, restorative sleep the body relies on most.
Whether you’re taking steps to understand your risk, supporting a loved one through treatment, living with prostate cancer, or navigating life as a survivor, this month is a good moment to pause on why these habits matter. Talk to your doctor about your risk and whether screening, a simple blood test, is right for you. And if this message speaks to you or someone you know, share it with them too.
