Two Cancers, Different Conversations

Prostate Cancer Is as Common as Breast Cancer

1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime. For Black men, it is 1 in 6. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, and many of them will never talk about it outside a doctor’s office.

That number matters this month, because 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. The same odds. Breast cancer awareness became one of the most successful health movements ever, and it saved lives for a simple reason: it made the conversation normal.

So talk to the men in your life. Not just in October, but at the dinner table, on the drive home, whenever it fits. Ask if they have talked to their doctor about a PSA test. It is a simple blood test, and finding this early is what saves lives.

33 Years of Research Behind Every Diagnosis

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer today, you have options that did not exist a generation ago.

In 1995, Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin discovered why hormone therapy stops working for some men. That finding led to treatments doctors now use every day, and men are living longer because of it.

At the 33rd Annual PCF Scientific Retreat, Dr. Taplin received the PCF Women in Science Lifetime Achievement Award. PCF President and CEO Gina Carithers asked her what has changed most for men with prostate cancer.
