About Susan D.

In 1992 my then boyfriend was moving our soon to be born son’s baby furniture around. He pulled a muscle which ended up being prostatitis. Fast forward to Oct 5th our son was born. Fast forward 14 months later Lou and I were married. Just before our wedding Lou’s doc wanted to do another PSA test and found his #s were a bit high. So a biopsy was done. 10 days after our wedding we got the call that a few cells biopsied were cancer. Our world changed in the blink of an eye. No google or wifi….every bit of info was gathered by phone and dial-up searches. On Feb 4th 1993 he had a radical prostatectomy ( 8 hour surgery) done at Duke Hospital in Durham NC. We are blessed his cancer was contained in the prostate so nothing more was needed to be done. The side effects of that surgery was devastating to our life. Incontinence and ED set in quickly and has never changed. So we had a normal marriage for 10 days and the rest of our life rotates around those side affects. I made the decision early on that I didn’t care about the things that affected MY life because I had him alive and by my side. We also realized that if we had waited until marriage to get pregnant that would have never happened. My son is now 26. Our marriage has lasted 25 years with a few bumps but more love than I thought was possible for this man. As of 2 days ago he is now 25 years cancer free!! PSA tests are sometimes false positive but for us …a hunch by our doctor…..saved Lou’s life and we are so blessed to keep celebrating cancer free life.
